Now, the new Safety Rest Area in Chambers County (mm 815) is now "officially" open for business. Cutting the ribbon with big blue scissors, TxDOT staff, Chambers County officials, elected leaders and a member of the White family signified the end of a project to make Texas highways safer.
The new rest areas are built on historic property belonging to the White family, close to where the Texas war of independence began...and ended. Both east and westbound rest areas have interactive videos, historical artifacts and free WiFi for travelers.
